Barbara Etzel Hammer Schmidt, 80, lifetime resident of Mt. Angel, Oregon passed away peacefully on June 7, 2021 at Salem Hospital surrounded by family. She was born December 7, 1940 in Salem, Oregon to Adolph and Dorothy Etzel. She attended Mt. Angel High School and graduated in 1959. She worked at the Mt. Angel Abbey for 30 plus years. She was first married to Vincent Hammer on June 3, 1961 until his death on October 26, 1984. Together they raised 4 children. She later married Joseph Schmidt on April 14, 1988, until he passed away on December 16, 2018. Together they enjoyed going to the coast and traveling many other places to visit friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, brothers Daryl and Don Etzel, granddaughter Bridgett Hammer, and nephew Kevin Mullen. Barbara was a member of the Catholic Daughters, Mt. Angel Historical Society and Silverton Elkettes for many years. She loved going to the beach, spending time with loved ones, Oktoberfest, and listening to classic country music. Barbara is survived by her four children, Doug (Maureen) Hammer, Ron (Chris) Hammer, Julie Hammer, Steve (Molly) Hammer. Stepchildren, Bob (Patty) Schmidt, Karen (Carl) Ryan, Susan (Gene) Bielemeier, Leonard (Liz) Schmidt, Ron (Cindy) Schmidt, Pat Schmidt. Barbara is also survived by her sister, Nadine (Jim) Mullen, brother Ken Etzel, sister in laws Joyce and Dolores Etzel. She will be lovingly remembered by her 24 grandchildren, 11 great grand children, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at Unger Funeral Chapel 190 Railroad Ave, Mt. Angel from 10am-5pm on Monday June 14. Rosary will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 7pm Monday June 14. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 11am on Tuesday June 15 in Mt. Angel Oregon.We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Salem Hospital and Orchard House for their wonderful care and compassion for our mother. Remembrances may be made to St. Mary's Parish, Mt. Angel, or Mt. Angel Abbey.
