Br. Brian
Clearman
Mar 19, 1941 — May 29, 2020
Mount Angel
BROTHER BRIAN CLEARMAN, O.S.B., a monk of Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon, U.S.A., passed peacefully to the Lord on the 29 th day of May, 2020; he was 79 years of age, and 53 years professed as a monk. Br. Brian was born in 1941 in Longview Washington, where he was raised and received his early education. Two years of college studies at St. Martin's College in Lacey, Washington, from 1960 to 1962 brought him into his first contact with a Benedictine institution, and soon after his further studies and graduation from Portland State University with his simple profession as a monk on September 29, 1966, receiving the name of Brian. In 1974 he earned a Master of science degree from the University of Oregon. Over the years, this golden jubilarian in monastic life served as a seminary high school teacher (1968-76), as a business office staff person (1976-2002), and since 2002 he put his excellent organizational skills to use as the Abbey archivist. For many years, besides his other work, this highly reserved monk labored privately and diligently on a scholarly project involving symbols used for transportation makings, even publishing works ranging from railway signals to international marine and aeronautical navigation aids. But it is for his expertise as Abbey archivist that Br, Brian is particularly recognized. His open-heart surgery in 2017 did not end his work in the archives! May he rest for ever in the peace of Christ…
