Donald (Don) Herman Huebsch, 95, a veteran of World War II and longtime resident of Mt. Angel, Oregon, passed away on May 11, 2021.

Don was born on November 15, 1925 at St. James Hospital in Per-ham Minnesota. He was one of nine children born to Michael (Mike) and Florence (Weis) Huebsch. After graduating from high school in 1943, at the age of 17, Don traveled out to Oregon to stay with his Aunt Minnie Weis in Mt. Angel. While in Mt. Angel Don helped harvest flax and peas and worked on the surveyor crew that built the Aurora State Airport. During his time in Oregon he met many folks, who would later become, his long term friends including the Schmidt, Hassler, Travis, Farnsworth, Lulay, and Schaecher families.

Don joined the United States Navy in 1944, became a Marine, served his boot camp through San Diego, and took his subsequent specialty training as a radio operator (one of his many skills) at Farragut, Idaho's Naval Training Station. Don was shipped to the South Pacific through San Diego on the USS Harry Taylor in early 1945. He served on several small islands during the war, including Falalop Island and was honorably discharged in July, 1946.

After World War II he returned to Minnesota and married Beata Caroline Lein on June 15, 1949 in Perham, Minnesota. They were married for 67 years. In 1954, Don, Beata, and their family moved to Mt. Angel where Don set up his cabinet making busi-ness (Norwood Cabinet Company). And for most of his working life built cabinets, restored old furniture, remodeled buildings, and a became master of many skills for operating and fixing var-ious mechanical and electronic equipment. Don was also an ac-tive member of the community serving on the local school board, city council, and the board overseeing the City's annual Octoberfest.

Don is survived by seven of his eight children; Mike, Debbie, Dave, Pat, Mark, Susie, and Dawn. As of his passing, he also had 20 grandchildren, and 30+ great grandchildren. He was pre-ceded in death by his wife, Beata in 2016 and son, Francis (Fritz) in 2015.

A memorial mass will be held at Mt. Angel's St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Angel on Tuesday, May 25th, with arrangements through Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton.
