Doris Martin was born in Aumsville, Oregon. Her family, parents Claude Arba Martin and Flora Grice Martin and her four siblings then moved to Salem where s he graduated from Salem High School in 1947.  She completed her education with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Linfield College in 1951.

Queen Doris I, Linfield College's May Queen of 1951, married Tom Hartley in February 1953 in Salem, Oregon.  They started their 54 years of life together in Silverton, Oregon.

Doris had a strong work ethic.  She worked for the State of Oregon as a social worker and then for the Silverton School District as the School Secretary for Mark Twain School and then Robert Frost School.  On the Hartley Family farm, Doris was a tractor and truck driver extraordinaire.  She fed the shearing crew, the haying crew, and anyone who walked in the door.  At times, the meals were prepared on a wood burning stove without a dishwasher.  Along with cooking, Doris grew and canned most of the food she served.  Her vegetable garden was extensive and bountiful.  After retirement, she focused her energy on gardening and traveling with Tom.

Doris enjoyed hosting and entertaining for family gatherings and also for friends.  Doris and Tom were known for their large lamb barbeques, dinner parties, New Years' Day brunches at Silver Creek Falls, and backyard picnics.  Most of all, Doris LOVED Christmas and could have celebrated it year-round.

Family was important to Doris.  She raised her two daughters, Janice and Karen.  Many other people think of her as a second Mom.  As Head Counselor, "Dynamite Doris" hosted her grandson Devin each summer at "Camp Please and Thank You".

Doris believed that community service was a personal responsibility.  Her service included volunteering at the Well-Child Clinics and being a Girl Scout Troop leader.  She served on the Boards of the Silverton Library and the Silverton Country Historical Society.  She was a active member of Silverton P.E.O., the Silverton United Methodist Church, and other organizations.  Doris believed an integral part of community service was being informed about political issues.  Her entire life she used this information to vote to better her community.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Tom Hartley, 2007; her father, Arba Martin, 1960; her mother, Flora Grice Martin, 1993; brothers, Victor Martin, 1994 and Walter Martin, 1993; sisters Cleta Bouveron, 1993 and Ardeth Martin, 1995.

Doris is survived by her daughters, Janice Lynn Hartley (Timothy James Cunningham) of Boulder, Colorado and Karen Marie Hartley of Aloha, Oregon, grandson, Devin Hartley Cunningham of Durango, Colorado, and brother-in-law, David Douglas Hartley (Hazel Hartley) of Scotts Mills, Oregon.

Memorials may be directed to the Silverton Country Historical Society, the Silverton High School Alumni Fund, the Silverton United Methodist Church, or the charity of your choice.

Graveside service will take place at City View Cemetery on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at 11 am
