LIFE OF ELSIE BERNING (2017-2024)
Elsie Mavis Jackson was born in Milwaukee, WI on October 24, 1927, and died in West Linn, OR on Jan. 18, 2024.
Elsie moved to Oregon at the age of 5 with her family, where they lived in the Crooked Finger/Scotts Mills area, and later settled in
Silverton which opened up opportunities for the entire family. She attended Silverton High School and after graduating High School, attended Beauty School in Salem. Elsie borrowed money from her father to open a salon in Mt. Angel. Very forward thinking for this time and era!
Elsie and her friends loved to attend VFW dances where she met a young man, who became a special part of her life. Elsie and Louis Berning were married on Oct. 22, 1949, in Mt. Angel, OR. Shortly after their marriage they moved to the Monitor area where they farmed for 35+ years, raising their 6 children.
In 1987, during the retirement years, Elsie & Louis moved to Sedona, AZ. They enjoyed several years in Sedona, before Louis passed away in1993, Elsie then moved to North Scottsdale.
in 1997, Elsie married a second time to Dr Virgil Pettit, from Silverton. She and Virgil enjoyed 4 1/2 years together; traveling and living in both AZ and OR. After Virgil passed, Elsie returned to Oregon in 2005, to live full time in Woodburn, coming home to her roots.
She is survived by her sister Donna Williams, living in CA, Children
Denise (Len) Adams, Greg (Linda) Berning, Ron (Dianne) Berning, Doug Berning, and Sandy (John) Smith. 9 Grandchildren and 12
great-grandchildren. Many Nieces & Nephews.
Elsie was preceded in death by her son Steven Berning, sister Gale
Taylor, husbands Louis Berning and Virgil Pettit.
Elsie peacefully passed away on Jan. 18, 2024.
She will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery, Mt. Angel, OR
on March 1, 2024 Services will be Rosary at 10:30, Funeral Mass at 11, internment, then light lunch at Church Hall.
