Fr. Augustine
Denoble
Oct 25, 1925 — Nov 9, 2019
Mt. Angel
FATHER AUGUSTINE DeNOBLE, O.S.B., a monk of Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon , U.S.A. , passed peacefully to the Lord on the 9 th day of November, 2019, in the 95 th year of his life, in the 70 th year of his profession as a monk, and in his 65 th year as a priest. At the time of his passing he was the eldest member of the monastic community. Fr. Augustine was born in Wisconsin but grew up in Tillamook , Oregon . After college studies at Mount Angel Seminary he entered the Abbey and made profession as a monk in 1950. His ordination to the priesthood followed in 1955, and in later studies he earned a Master of Library Science degree from the University of Washington . Fr. Augustine served for some time as assistant librarian at the Abbey, and he likewise set up the libraries of the Abbey's monastic foundation in Idaho and Mexico . As a gifted archivist and researcher Fr. Augustine became particularly knowledgeable in the early history of the Abbey, and he saw to the compilation and binding of much related historical material. In the area of the liturgy the monastic community is greatly indebted to Fr, Augustine for his years of work to develop the Abbey's English version of the Liturgy of the Hours which remains in daily use by the monks of Mount Angel . As a priest Fr. Augustine loved the ministry of sacramental reconciliation, and many hearts were touched by this compassionate confessor! Many, too, it may be added, delighted in the beautiful flowers that he cultivated along the stations pathway winding up the hill! May he rest forever in the peace of Christ whom he served so long and so lovingly…
