James Christopher (Jim) Marquiss passed away on August 9, 2024, at his home in the Silverton Hills in Oregon with his wife Karen by his side. He was born in Kansas City on July 1, 1951, to Lorence and Mildred Marquiss. The family moved to Washington state and Jim grew up with his four brothers on the waters of Puget Sound at Priest Point near Marysville. There, he developed his deep love of the water, the mountains, and the wilderness. Jim honed his natural artistic abilities and became a skilled artist, learning to draw, sketch, paint, and design buildings at an early age. He went on to study at the University of Washington in Seattle where he earned a degree in urban planning. Jim became an award-winning commercial, residential, and interior architect in Seattle and designed plans for the original Pike Street Hill Climb. He met and married Karen in Seattle and they subsequently moved to Philadelphia, where Jim worked to design the control center for Metro-North Railroad at Grand Central Station in New York City. After moving to San Francisco in the early 1990s, Jim collaborated with other architects and built his own residential architecture firm, serving clients throughout the Bay Area. He was an active Lay Ecumenical Minister at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco for nineteen years, where he established the Benedictine spirituality group, held retreats, and led a number of congregation ministries. Jim retired to Oregon in 2010 and continued to encourage others in the faith community, including mission trips to Mexico. Throughout his life, Jim loved to explore the wilderness, climbing Northwest peaks, hiking in Yosemite and the High Sierras, fishing with long-time buddies, and exploring the beach. He was a talented artist, outstanding chef, charming conversationalist, and inspirational friend. Survivors include his wife Karen, twin brother Phillip (Debbie), and brothers William and Guy Quinten (Jan) Marquiss. "We salute you, Jim!
