Obituary

Johnny Lee Mack

February 2, 1963 – October 21, 2026

Johnny Lee Mack, 63, of Sublimity, Oregon, passed away on October 21, 2026, after a six-year battle with oligodendroglioma, a form of brain cancer. He was born on February 2, 1963, in Silverton, Oregon.

Johnny was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was funny, a little goofy, humble, and always willing to help someone in need. He seemed to know something about just about everything, and if he didn't have an answer, he would do his best to find one. Family, friends, and coworkers often turned to him for advice or help through difficult situations. He was someone people could count on, and he never made a big deal out of it.

Johnny spent more than 25 years at Chemeketa Community College, beginning in 1995 as a Fire Protection Technology instructor and eventually becoming Executive Dean of Career and Technical Education. He retired in April 2021. Chemeketa was a huge part of his life, and he took great pride in his work and the people he worked with. He also gave his time to various boards and helped at Mountain View Church in Aumsville.

Although his career meant a great deal to him, his family always came first. Johnny and his wife, Launa, were married on September 17, 1983, and shared 43 years of marriage. Together they raised three children. He was a proud father and grandfather who could always be counted on when his family needed him.

Johnny loved Oregon Ducks football and had been a season ticket holder nearly three decades. He also enjoyed traveling and managed to achieve his lifelong goal of visiting all 50 states.

One of the things people will remember most about Johnny is how much he did for others. He was hardworking, compassionate, and generous with his time. Even throughout his illness, he rarely complained or felt sorry for himself. He was much more concerned with making sure everyone else was doing okay.

Johnny is survived by his wife, Launa Mack; his children, Derek (Kayla), Amanda (Juan), and Trevor (Janet); his three granddaughters, Emmalyn, Malia, and Hattie; and his brothers, Jerry, Jeff, and Jay. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Those who knew Johnny will miss his humor, his advice, and the comfort of knowing he was always there when they needed him. Most of all, they'll remember his warm hugs and the quick smile that made everyone feel welcome.

A celebration of Johnny's life will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at the Chemeketa Community College Auditorium.
