Joseph Stephen Baxa October 30, 1941 – May 14, 2024
Joseph "Joe" was born October 30, 1941 in Hlohovec, Slovakia. He passed away early in the morning on May 14, 2024 at his home in Silverton, Oregon.
Joe's family immigrated to St. Paul, Oregon from Austria and later moved to the Portland area where Joe graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1959. Joe joined the Marines on April 4th, 1961. After completing his enlistment in the Marines Joe went to work for Fred Meyer.
Joe married Fran Dettwyler on October 19th, 1991. They lived in Aloha, Oregon several years before moving to Silverton, Oregon the spring of 1993. Joe retired from Fred Meyer after nearly 40 years and then worked another 17 years for JB Instant Lawn. Joe had a passion for working with wood and spent many hours in his shop making unique walking sticks and bird houses, amongst other things. He loved to share his creations with everyone he met.
Joe is survived by his wife Fran (Dettwyler) Baxa and sister Clementine (Dennis) Wallin.
Graveside services will be held on May 20, 2024, 12:30 pm at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 333 SW Skyline Blvd, Portland, OR.
An open house in remembrance of Joe's life will be held Thursday May 23, 2024, 6-9pm at JB Instant Lawn Office – 5289 Bluegrass Ln NE, Silverton, OR.
