Leon Joseph Berning, known to many as Beans, died peacefully in Mt. Angel on Nov. 26 at the age of 94.

Leon is survived by his children Herb, Jackie, Maureen, Beth, Randy, and Tim, along with his two sisters Joan and Jean. He is preceded in death by his son Kurt, and wife Margaret. Leon had 21 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

"Model 29" is how he referred to his age, born March 10, 1929, to Cecelia and Clement (CJ) Berning. Around the age of 10, he started working on his family's dairy, getting up early to do chores. Once he was able to drive, he was the town milkman, delivering milk prior to the start of his school day. This job suited him well, being a friendly and social person by nature.

Leon graduated high school from Mt. Angel Academy, then went to University of Portland for a year on a basketball scholarship. After that, he worked full-time on the family dairy till he was drafted, serving overseas in Japan during the Korean conflict. Soon after his return, he married Margaret Lulay, whom he had dated prior to being in the service. A nearby farm was then purchased, which he worked on in addition to the dairy. Leon indicated the early years were lean, with he and Margaret putting all of their efforts into financing the farm.

He developed some hobbies when he was older, including building sheds, trips to Reno, puzzling, bowling, and cracking walnuts.  Leon was a card player, enjoying pinochle at pretty much any time of day. He was a devout member of the St. Mary's Parish, missing mass only when sick.

His children remember him as a kind, patient, and supportive father who encouraged them to pursue their goals. Some of their favorite memories include…..

Getting up happily before sunrise to move irrigation. Being able to fix just about anything. A love for soft - not crunchy - cookies. Mustard sandwiches. Painful but loving knee squeezes if you sat near him. Daily naps taken right after lunch on a hard wooden bench, often after listening to Paul Harvey, using the daily newspaper as a blanket. Happy, family oak-leaf rakings. Heartfelt appreciation for each visit. An uncanny ability to end every discussion on a positive note, showing his precious dimples, complete with a twinkle in his eye.

The rosary, followed by a funeral is scheduled for 10:30, Dec. 2, at St. Mary's Parish in Mt. Angel. A reception will follow, with all welcome to attend and celebrate Leon's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Mary's Church. The family would like to express deep gratitude to the caregivers at Serene Gardens, who provided loving care during the past 4 years.
