Nellie Edna Soles was born December 13, 1922, near the small town of Millboro, in Tripp County, South Dakota. She was the fifth of fourteen children born to William (Bill) and Dottie (McCloughan) Soles. Nellie was raised on the family farm and attended Lost Creek School, a one-room country school south of Millboro. She was a 1941 graduate of Millboro High School, this being the time high school classes were held in the Millboro Church. Daily, she walked eight miles round-trip to and from high school, her only other option was riding a horse, which she seldom did because [in Nellie's words] "he was a mean one!" After Nellie graduated high School, she taught for a while at the country school southeast of Wewela, South Dakota.

The Soles and Warner families were neighbors in South Dakota. The Warner family eventually moved to Spokane, WA. In the summer of 1942, Clyde Warner returned to the Millboro area, and on August 8, 1942, Nellie and Clyde were married in Winner, South Dakota. Shortly after their marriage, Clyde and Nellie joined the Warner family in Spokane. They were in Spokane only a few months when Clyde was called for active duty in the Army, leaving in December 1942. Nellie remained in Spokane, and on June 27, 1943, their daughter, Carol June, was born. After Clyde's training, he was stationed in Canada for almost two years. When he was transferred to Louisiana and later to Texas, Nellie and Carol were able to join him at both places. Clyde was then transferred to Hawaii, and Nellie and Carol went to South Dakota to be with family. After Clyde was discharged in November 1945, Clyde and Nellie remained in South Dakota for a while and then returned to Spokane making their home there. Their son, Norman Lee, was born March 17, 1947. The birth of their second daughter, Esther Elaine, on July 17, 1951, completed their family.

In 1954 Nellie and Clyde sold their home in Spokane and moved back to South Dakota. They lived in South Dakota for two years, and then moved to Emmett, Idaho, where one of Nellie's sisters and her husband were living. While in Emmett, Nellie did seasonal work in the cannery and fruit packing houses.

In October 1962, Nellie and Clyde moved to the Willamette Valley in Oregon, eventually settling in the Salem/Brooks area. Nellie worked in the laundry at Salem Memorial Hospital for many years, retiring from there.

Nellie was an avid gardener, raising large gardens and canning the vegetables she grew. She liked to go fishing, and she and Clyde spent many hours in their boat at Devil's lake, on the Oregon coast. Nellie loved sewing and crafting. She was always busy working on a project, and eagerly would tackle something new. Her all time favorite was crocheting, she said her grandmother taught her to crochet. Nellie also loved to travel. Nellie was a member of Eagles lodge in Salem for many years, and a lifetime member of VFW and DAV.

Nellie lived a very happy and prosperous life. Her "riches" were the love and good times she shared with her family and friends, and she had a passion for living her life to the fullest every day. She has seen many changes in the world in her "96 years". One of her dreams for many years was to fly in an airplane. That dream was fulfilled at the age of 91, when she flew from Portland, OR to Yuma, AZ to visit her sister, and Warner nieces and nephews.

Nellie died peacefully in her sleep on December 14, 2018, the day after her 96 ^th birthday.

Nellie will always be remembered for her outgoing personality, her warm heart and her beautiful smile.

Nellie was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Clyde. Also preceding her in death were her parents; five brothers: John Henry (Infant), Woodrow (Bud), Frank, Harold, and Lewis Soles; and four sisters: Velma Wilch, Ines Sharp, Pearl Chambers and Anna Divine.

Surviving Nellie are her son and two daughters: Norman Warner of Salem, OR, Esther Borchowa of Stayton, OR Carol Gray of Crooked River Ranch, OR; nine grandchildren; twenty two great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Nellie is also survived by her brother, George Soles of Millboro, SD; and three sisters: Ellen Goslin of Emmett, ID; Helen Michel of Poway, CA; and Mary Hayford from Mt. Angel, OR. Also surviving Nellie are many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. She also had a very special place in her heart for "her little doggy Frosty Gray".

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. til 3:00 p.m. Thursday, Dec 20 ^th at Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton.  A graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2018 at Bethany Cemetery.
