Norman Edward Hettwer passed away peacefully of natural causes on February 2, 2021, in Canby, Oregon.  He was 86, and was born January 16, 1935, in Crooked Finger, Oregon. He was the oldest of three boys to Albert Gust and Theresa Mary (Bartnik) Hettwer.  He married his sweetheart Dorothy Weinacht on April 22, 1961, and they were blessed with six children whom they raised near Mt. Angel.

After completing school, he went to work with his dad running his sawmill and eventually became co-owner and partner in Hettwer Bros. Inc. with his brothers.  Norman served in the Oregon National Guard where he won awards for his marksmanship and later used those skills as an avid deer and elk hunter.

Originally Hettwer Bros. Inc. handled small logging contracts, but with the help of their wives, the brothers were able to acquire timberland of their own.  They also managed the Silverton-area timberland for the Mt. Angel Abbey.  He was a member of the Associated Oregon Loggers, a life-long Catholic and member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a member of the Mt. Angel Knights of Columbus.  Norman was an incredibly hard worker, and his passion was being in nature and he loved working in the woods and "watching his trees grow".

Norman was ahead of his time managing forestland. He used the leftover hardwood trees from the forest cuts to make firewood. He spent much of his spare time splitting, stacking and delivering the firewood; oftentimes with one of his children at his side.  Dorothy worked hard to help manage all the orders they sold, and they both took pride in providing firewood at an affordable price to homeowners who were elderly or unable to find it elsewhere. He was known for his well-worn Ford trucks to haul the wood, and he knew how to stack it perfectly to fit a full load.

Norman was predeceased by his parents, his wife Dorothy and his brother Leonard.  He is survived by his brother Hubert (Barbara) Hettwer, children Edward (Nora) Hettwer, Theresa (Todd) Snelson and Andrew (Erica) Hettwer of Canby, Kathy (John) Griffin and Cindy Martinez of Aurora, and Sandra (John) Correa of Honolulu, Hawaii.  Norman had 16 grandchildren including Kevin, Eric and Kristen Hettwer; Lauren Leach and Claire Snelson; Ryan Avery, Rachel Toney and Karly Griffin; Phillip, Jared and Briana Martinez; Tuan Giang and Kainoa and Kala'e Correa; and Mitchell and Audrey Hettwer.  In addition, he had 12 great-grandchildren and dozens of nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or Country Side Living and/or Thelma's Place, Canby, who took such good care of Norman in his last years.  Arrangements by Unger Funeral Chapel – Mt. Angel.
