Richard A. (Dick) DeSantis passed away peacefully on October 4, 2026, surrounded by his devoted wife of 67 years and his loving children, following a short but courageous battle with kidney cancer.
Dick was born on June 24, 1939, in Silverton, Oregon, to Albert and Mary (Martin) DeSantis. Growing up in Silverton, he attended St. Paul Catholic School and Mt. Angel Prep, graduating in 1958. Shortly after, on January 24, 1959, he married the love of his life, Patricia Huffstutter, beginning a beautiful 67-year journey together. Between 1961 and 1970, Dick and Patty welcomed five children, and they worked tirelessly to ensure their family always had everything they needed.
A natural entrepreneur and a man of boundless energy, Dick’s legendary work ethic started at just seven years old, spraying local farms alongside his grandfather. Throughout his life, Dick tried his hand at nearly every line of work—from farming strawberries and pole beans, to construction, paving and seal coating and transplanting enormous trees. He was truly ahead of his time, known for his innovative ideas, sharp skills, and a rare ability to fix almost anything. If he didn't know how to fix it, he would always find a way to get the job done. He loved to work and could frequently be found working late into the evening just to see a job through to completion.
Above all, Dick will be remembered for his immense generosity and love for people. He never knew a stranger - if he knew you, he knew you - he loved helping anyone in need and was truly the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Mary; his brothers, Tom and Larry; his sister, Julie; brothers-in-law, Bill and Wayne; sisters-in-law, Linda and Irene; great grandson, Milo; and his beloved daughter, Becky.
He is survived and will be deeply missed by his wife, Patricia (Patty); his children, Martin of Salem, Amy (Ken) Carey of Stayton, Jennifer (David) Springer of Silverton, and Angela (Chris) Fleshman of Silverton. He also leaves behind a proud legacy of 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, with twins expected in 2027, as well as an extended family that will greatly miss him.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, October 9th, 2026, at 11:00am at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Angel. The Recitation of the Rosary will precede the service at 10:30am. The Rite of Committal and Burial will be at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery in Silverton, following the Funeral Mass. Arrangements are being made by Unger Funeral Chapel in Silverton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made "In memory of Dick DeSantis" to St. Paul Cemetery, c/o Chris Fleshman, 958 Florida Dr, Silverton, Or. 97381
