Born on December 14, 1948 at Silverton Hospital, Richard John Hammelman passed away on June 30, 2026 in Portland, OR.  He was born to Francis and Adelene (Bochsler) Hammelman and attended Mt Angel Prep, graduating from John F. Kennedy High School in 1967 and Salem Tech in Mechanical Engineering in 1969.  He lived the majority of his life in the Mount Angel area, where he farmed, raised his family, and was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church.  Rich served three terms as Monitor School Board Chairman, was part of the Monitor Rural Fire Board, and was awarded NORPAC cauliflower grower of the year.  He also served in the Woodburn National Guard.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Marylee Schaeffer and Diane Sowa.  He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Marilyn; children LaVonne (Matt Mattison) of Oroville, WA; Ben (Katie) and children Clayton, Hank, Sofia, and Luke of Condon; and Bruce (Claire) and children Mark, Grace, John, Andrew, and Jacob of Mount Angel; two brothers Fr. William Hammelman OSB of Mount Angel and Dan (Bernadette) of Molalla.

The recitation of the rosary will be held on July 7, 2026 at 7:00pm with mass of Christian Burial on July 8, 2026 at 11:00am – both held at St. Mary Catholic Church, Mount Angel, OR; reception immediately following.  Rich will be interred at Calvary Cemetery Mount Angel.  Arrangements by Unger Funeral Chapel.
