Robert has several nicknames that he used throughout his life. One was Radar which was given to him when he worked out at the Aviation Unit at the Salem Airport. The reason, so he said, was that there were so many "Bobs" in that unit that they created nicknames for them to make sure they had the right Bob. So, because he resembled the character Radar on the TV program "Mash", that became his nickname. The other names he had were Bob, or Bobby as the family had called him.

He was born at the Salem Hospital to his parents Elmer and Cecilia McClaughry, in 1948 and he was the fourth child in the family and the last one to be born. He went to Hazel Green Grade School, Waldo Middle School, North Salem High School, and then to McNary High School where his class was the first to graduate from that school.

After graduation, he signed up for the Navy and was eventually sent to Viet Nam on Active Duty, in 1966. In Saigon, Bob was assigned to the 521 st River Patrol Division. Bob served his time in Viet Nam and was released from Navy Duty in September 1968.

Of course, after coming back from Active Duty, he served in the Army National Guard. Bob interviewed and got a job with Detachment 1 and in Company108th Helicopter Unit at the Salem Airport as a full-time technician at AASF in Salem, OR. Bob also worked with the Oregon RSMS program in Clackamas at Camp Withycombe, and received a plaque for his Dedication, Service and support from October 1994 to June 2000.

Bob was also a Volunteer Fireman with Marion County Fire District #1 which started in the Spring of 1969. He served as a Firefighter for Marion County Fire District #1 for 30 years. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant, at Middle Grove Fire Station #2. He served from 1970 to 2000.

In 1976, Bob found out about his condition concerning his kidneys from a routine physical from Nation Guard Training. His condition progressed and eventually went into kidney failure and went onto dialysis until he received a donated kidney in 2001. That donated kidney lasted for about 24 years. He also endured a triple bypass to his heart, COVID and other conditions that could have taken him at any time, but he seemed to bounce back after each of these episodes until his last time.

Bob, in his retirement, loved to spend a fair amount of time traveling around the local area in his big red RAM truck just to see what he could see. He also loved to eat, and his favorite haunts were, The Wooden Nickel, in Silverton, where he loved the bone-in "Bang-Bang" chicken wings and Café 99 in brooks, where he liked the Clam Chowder.

Bob is survived by his wife Sandi, his daughter Andrea Armer (Micah) and son Todd (Nicole). His grandchildren are Kaitlyn (Andrea/Micah), Hunter, Ashton (Todd), and newly added grandchildren, Macy, Danielle and Katie (Nicole). Bob also is survived by his sister, Linda Bergerson (Roger), brothers Jerry, and Phil (Deb).

Bob will be truly missed by all, especially his wife of 49 years of marriage. Through thick and thin we both took care of each other. I, Sandi, will miss him the most.

Bob will be interned at Mt Hope Pioneer Cemetery.
