Henry Vincent Steinkamp, Woodburn, Oregon

Vince was born Oct. 2, 1932, to Veronica and Felix Steinkamp of Brooks, Oregon. He passed away on Nov. 9, 2022, just a few days before his 68th wedding anniversary and 5 weeks after celebrating his 90th birthday. He was preceded in death 6 weeks prior by his son Paul. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Darlene (Kleczynski) Steinkamp, and his children, Jim (Chris), Tom (Debbie), Cindy, Linda (Greg Giles), Mark (Bonnie), daughter in law Anne, Steve (Cara), Daniel (Heidi), David (Lisa), and Julie (Gordon Kenyon); 24 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren. He was the fifth of 6 children; his sister Sr. Mary Julia and sister in-law Doneva are the last of that generation still living. Vince attended Sacred Heart School in Gervais, Sacred Heart Academy in Salem, Mt. Angel Prep, Seattle University, Harvard University and Oregon State University. He grew up on the family farm northeast of Brooks where he had many pets including a chicken and a skunk. He served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955 in the 537 Engineer CO at Fort Scott, Presidio of San Francisco, with duties in Alaska. Vince married Darlene Nov. 13, 1954. He worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers on construction of multi-purpose dams in Oregon: Cougar, Fall Creek, Blue River, Lost Creek, Applegate and Elk Creek; and the installation of turbines and generators at the 2nd powerhouse of Bonneville. Vince retired in 1988. He was the Area Engineer for the Rogue River Basin projects and resident Engineer for Elk Creek Dam. He did minor Engineering consulting work from 1989-1994. Then he took over management and operation of the family farm. In their many moves, Vince always found a way to give generously to his community. In Medford, he served on the St. Mary's school board and spent many hours working at the school, repairing, installing and maintaining the facilities. At Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church, Central Point, he also spent many hours working and serving. He enjoyed his family, farming, gardening, prospecting for gold, and building things. He taught us all to play the card game of Hearts and was hard to beat at the game. His favorite prayer: "My God, I love you, believe in you, hope in you and am sorry for having offended thee. Guide me to do your will always."

Services and interment will be held at St Luke Catholic Church and cemetery, Woodburn, Fri. Dec. 2, with Rosary starting at 10:30 am. Arrangements made by Unger Funeral Chapel.
